Jarvis Jensen's having the worst day of his life … again.
Justin Davies (Firebloom) returns with a fun-filled time loop story, mixing hilarious characters with some genuinely warm moments. Jarvis is obsessed with two things: numbers, and Fabio Fabuloso, star of Dance Like You Mean It. He even measures every day on a Fabuloso scale up to 100. But this day is definitely not Fabuloso…
It starts with terrible farts and a big brother taking the last chocolate cereal, gets worse at school – being forced to clean bird poo, getting spattered with paint by the Kaos Kollective gang, dragged into a food fight, forced to stand on stage for a spelling competition he ABSOLUTELY cannot win… And then in the evening, missing his chance at the Dance Like You Mean It auditions. And tomorrow is just the same…
For, in the classic time loop trope, Jarvis is trapped in a forever Tuesday, and has no idea how to get out! Fortunately he's not alone, as new start (and very cool) Sunday is also trapped. Together, they have to work out what's going on, and how to break the cycle…
There are plenty of time loop stories, but Justin Davies has done a lovely job here of bringing freshness to the idea, thanks to the wonderful characters of Jarvis and Sunday, and the supporting school oddballs. The story is strongly inclusive, as both Jarvis and Sunday's characters challenge traditional gender stereotyping; it's also queer-friendly with Jarvis's two mums caught up in the time loop fun. It makes you realise how rare this still is in children's books, and how important.
The text is easy to read, with different fonts and styles bringing the words to life, and Tom Garrett Dibble's art is fun and engaging. And as the book goes on, there are some nice twists on the time loop trope – multiple loops at once, loops going backwards, and more…
A wonderfully silly, funny, easy-to-read adventure for anyone who's felt like their school day will never end.
Many thanks to Floris Books for sending me a preview copy of this book.
