Publish date:9 October 2025

Something different for my 'I Am Reading' challenge this week – not middle grade, but a collection of stories from new publishers Uncertain Stories. It's a collaboration from Rob Redmann (of The Fiction Desk) and the artist Lucy Scott, with an aim to explore a slightly more supernatural or speculative world…

I'm a big fan of The Fiction Desk (and have been lucky enough to see my stories feature in some of their collections, such as Somewhere This Way and Inside Voices). So I was interested to see where this new direction would lead. With writers from various backgrounds and styles (Eva Carson, Jack Edwards, David Frankel, Tamsin Hopkins, Nathanial Spain, Mark Taylor and Flo Ward) it's a fascinating collection!

I love short stories. A good story, like a Tardis, is always bigger on the inside. You can read the words in a few minutes – on the bus, last thing at night, waiting for the dog to settle down… – but the story spreads its wings around you, and before you know it, you could be anywhere.

Each of the stories in this book is worth a read. I have my own favourites, but each one is doing something interesting. And if you're in a bookshop, look out for the free Little Uncertainties, making their way across the UK!

Many thanks to Uncertain Stories for sending me a copy of this book.
