Henry Jekyll is a terrible child. But Eddie Hyde is even worse.

Jack Meggitt-Phillips is known for his brilliant and darkly humorous children's books, and his latest, the start of a new series, is a classic. In fact, it's inspired by a classic, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson – but this is a whole new story…

Meet Henry Jekyll, a young boy with very foolish parents who compete over him endlessly, showering him with praise and presents. He's spoiled, arrogant, and not as clever as he thinks he is – something he's about to discover. For when Henry inherits the ancient house belonging to the original Dr Jekyll, it includes instructions for a mysterious potion. And despite all warnings, he cannot resist giving it a try…

This is a wonderful book full of weird characters, many of whom aren't who they seem. What is it with Gabby, the young girl who wants to help everyone and is so determined that Henry inherit the house? Why do the miserable villagers hate the house so much, and who is the mysterious Lady Deadlock? The atmosphere is creepy, the humour is silly, and the book rackets along to a brilliantly explosive ending, with twists all along the way. Henry and Gabby make a great pair, and there is some surprisingly strong messaging about how we can make ourselves, and the world, better.

Perfect for fans of Mallory Vayle and the Curse of the Maggotty Skull, this is wickedly good and dreadfully funny, hilariously miserable and seriously silly. Brilliant stuff!

(p.s. This was an early review copy from Farshore – thank you! – but doesn't include Holly Swain's artwork yet. But based on the cover, where the rotten Henry Jekyll looks suspiciously like the author, I think it's going to be fab!)
