My first middle-grade book of 2026 is the upcoming CROW: THIEF OF MAGIC by debut author Fiona Dixon, and what a lot of fun it was!
Set in the fantasy city of Starsgard, the story follows the adventures of Crow, a young boy working for a criminal gang but dreaming of an escape for himself and his friends.
Crow's life is hard and dangerous, until he finds himself at the door of a mysterious sorcerer and discovers that he has his own magic – to travel through dreams, and even weave new ones. Crow's life changes dramatically, and everything seems to be going well, but… Who is his new master, really? Can he be trusted? What secrets hide in the mirrors?
And as a new comet appears in the sky, magic is changing. Something is coming that could destroy everyone…
This is a rich, atmospheric book, filled with great details of life as a thief. It will be instantly familiar to readers of series like Shadow and Bone, but cleverly worked to be suitable for middle-grade readers. The sense of danger is always present, and the dream magic is engrossing. I read the last few chapters in one sitting!
Crow: Thief of Magic is a rattling fantasy adventure with a great magic twist and characters to root for. Perfect for future fans of Shadow and Bone.
Many thanks to HarperCollins for sending me an early preview of this book.
