I'm a huge fan of Martin Howard's Mallory Vayle and Maggoty Skull books – wonderfully silly gothic horror books full of spooky nonsense. Here, Howard tackles, not gothic fiction, but real history – but the result is just as funny…
British Museum: The Bayeux Tapestry: The Graphic Novel explains what's going on in the famous Bayeux Tapestry (not a tapestry, it turns out). With scenes taken from the real thing, Howard and illustrator Javi de Castro give a clear, engaging account of the events that led to the greatest upheaval in British history.
And it's a cracking, fascinating read! It's a short book, beautifully illustrated, and stuffed with side jokes and silliness, but it also does a great job of explaining what happened, and why, and what it meant – including historical asides and little details (like, it's NOT A TAPESTRY).
This would be a great book for the classroom, or for any young reader interested in history. It's straightforward and easy to read, the illustrations are fun, and it has all the brilliant humour that Howard brings to his other books. I loved it!
