When Jasmine meets Joy, a reindeer calf, she falls completely in love. And when poor Joy is injured, Jasmine immediately offers to look after her on her family's farm. But Christmas is a chaotic time, with her duties at home clashing with school bullies, and chaos soon occurs! Can Jasmine nurse Joy back to health? And when she does, can she bear to let the little reindeer go?
The Jasmine Green series of books is a phenomenon – seventeen titles, seventeen animal stories, and each one told with just the right balance of cute and practical, tension and happiness, to keep you turning the pages and (whisper it) even learning something. I was fascinated by how Helen Peters slips in details of reindeer, from their incredible (and changing!) eyesight right down to their special snow-walking hooves. The story is perfect for storytelling or first reading, but not dumbed down – all the characters around Jasmine 'feel' right, and Jasmine herself isn't always perfect. And Ellie Snowdon's illustrations have a lovely sketch-like quality about them that fits just right for the story.
A perfect early-read story for animal lovers and future vets, with the cutest character ever 😊
